Modular Sonic Explorations
March 25-April 17, 2011
Land Gallery is excited to announce its latest installation, our first ever physical installation that combines elaborate equipment, photography and nature.
The exhibit of photographs and installation of Modular: Sonic Explorations is the photographic evidence of a fictitious experiment.
There has long been research into the sonic frequencies produced within nature and our environment; that plants make sounds, that the world vibrates, that radio frequencies are emitted by faraway galaxies.
The artwork for the Modular Project was inspired by a series of related questions, “What might it sound like if you were to connect with the world as a musical instrument?”, and, “What would a machine used to do this look like?”
As the artist pursued the answers to these questions there were inevitable subsequent questions about how someone might collect these different frequencies, what kind of devices might they use, and finally how might somebody illustrate the different results?
Through the process of proposing solutions to these questions, a full size Modular Unit was fabricated, as well as a collection of different listening devices. These objects were then installed in multiple natural environments across the Northwest, and photographed as they were connected to their surroundings.
