April 30 – May 23, 2010
Land presents Bright Forest: Paintings and Prints by Olympia, Washington, artist Sarah Utter.
Sarah is an amazing artist, designer and musician (a member of the bands Bangs and Western Hymn) who paints mostly birds, along with foxes and squirrels, and will be showing new paintings and archival giclée prints.
Her artwork highlights a love of the natural world, bright colors, and layers of pattern inspired by printmaking and textiles.
She has also designed many shirts, buttons, stickers and other items for buyolympia.com featuring her popular slogans such as “Reading Is Sexy ,” “Knitting Is Knotty” and “Future Librarian.”
Mecca Normal To Perform
Mecca Normal will perform “Blue Sky and Branches”—a new piece written for Sarah Utter’s art opening at Land on April 30.
Vocalist Jean Smith wanted to do something “vaguely collaborative” for the event —a response to themes in Utter’s artwork.
The literary rock duo has been collaborating since the mid-’80s. Over 13 studio albums. Jean’s typically terse narratives wrestle, often uncomfortably, with David Lester’s nearly orchestral solo electric guitar procedures.
