Endeavor and Embrace
October 8 – 24, 2010
Nikki’s calendars have become a staple in kitchens, offices and schools. Each image is an original papercut, cut from a single piece of paper.
Nikki features strong images of everyday life, each with a powerful verb that inspires to action.
If you’ve never seen a Nikki original in person, you owe it to yourself to come by and check them out. There’s something about the subtle shadows and fine detail on the cuts that really must be witnessed first hand.
Using only an X-Acto knife, a single sheet of paper, and the inspiration that surrounds her at her Olympia, Washington, home, Nikki McClure lovingly creates her intricate and beautiful paper cuts. Her work constructs a bold graphic language that translates the complex poetry of family, nature, and activism into endearing, positive, and disarmingly powerful images. Nikki makes a calendar every year as well as many books and pies. Nikki’s latest work includes papercuts from her 2011 calendar, Endeavour. Trees, limbs, age, strength and duty combine to form some of her most layered work to date. Other papercuts on display are from her upcoming book, Embrace, a journal for pregnancy to be published by Sasquatch Books next Spring. Following the success of The First 1000 Days, Nikki now examines her transition into motherhood, creating a space for women to notice and record their own transformation.
